Manchester United will likely have to dip into the transfer market to find a striker this summer as they are also looking for a new manager. Their neighbours, on the other hand, are closing in on a multi-million deal to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.
As United ponder their next move in the managerial market, the approaching summer transfer window also presents a number of issues as well as solutions. On the one hand, several players are expected to leave – including Edinson Cavani when his contract expires at the end of the season.
But the Red Devils will also have the chance to replace the Uruguayan, although they will find signing a striker isn’t cheap. In fact, just across the road, City are preparing to bring in Haaland – who could cost a total outlay of over £300m.
A new manager is likely to want to bring in a number of new faces, so spending anywhere near that amount on a striker is pretty much out of the question. So who can United sign for a fraction of the cost of Haaland and still be good enough to take on a new era at Old Trafford?
What better alternative is there to Haaland than the man who filled his shoes at RB Salzburg, where the Norway international first made his name? Sesko has all the assets to become a superstar.
He’s bulky but quick on the pitch, a massive aerial threat, able to hold the ball and get others to play. Many have advised the 18-year-old to keep going and have a long career, and Ralf Rangnick can use his connections at RB Salzburg to facilitate a deal.
The German-born striker has floated through the lower levels of football, but his goalscoring ability cannot be sniffed at, net for fun wherever he is. Brighton took a punt from him in January after impressing at sister club Union SG before loaning him out.
The 25-year-old is among the top strikers for goals in games after scoring 26 for 34, while also providing 10 assists, but it remains to be seen if he could lead the line at United, especially without have the chance to shine in one of the best leagues.
Nonetheless, Undav could be a name to remember for years to come if he hits the ground running at Brighton next season.
While his father Diego Simeone may be renowned for his ultra-defensive methods, Giovani couldn’t be more different, hitting the back of the net being the only thing that crosses his mind. Having signed for Hellas Verona last year on loan, El Cholito is in fine form – scoring 16 times this season.
Earlier this season Simeone stunned Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio when he netted the four in a 4-1 win and United could do with someone with that kind of firepower. However, Verona will likely trigger an option that will make Cagliari’s loan permanent – but they couldn’t reject an offer from United if it comes.
Staying in Italy, there is another striker who is making a name for himself in the north as Scamacca. The 23-year-old is one of the latest players to develop at Sassuolo, which helped turn Manuel Locatelli, Domenico Berardi and Jeremy Boga into Serie A’s top stars.
The Italy international is 6ft 5in and an absolute nuisance to defenders, scoring 13 times this season. However, he is not the only Neroverdi striker to have an impact…
Scamacca’s attacking partner Raspadori creates a classic big and small combo, but there’s plenty to be excited about for the 22-year-old. Noted for his quick and agile playing style, the striker often plays as a second striker to his taller friend, although his ability to use both feet and create as well as score goals has done a lot for him the best talent.
Raspadori has drawn comparisons to Carlos Tevez while the player himself has cited Sergio Ageuro as his main inspiration and has been named as Italy’s next top striker. It might be best for United to arrive early to get one of those forwards in Sassuolo before he inevitably signs for Juventus.
